Exam Results Day 2026 UK: A-Level, GCSE and Scotland Dates

Exam results day has a strange habit of feeling very far away until, suddenly, it is tomorrow.

After months of revision, stress, suspiciously expensive stationery and at least one declaration that everything has gone terribly, the waiting is almost over.

But there is not one single UK results day. The date depends on where someone studied, which qualification they took and which awarding organisation issued it.

Here are the confirmed 2026 exam results dates, what time results become available, what happens through UCAS and what to do if things do not go quite to plan.

UK exam results dates for 2026

The main dates for England are confirmed in the Ofqual student guide. Wales follows the same principal dates for AS and A levels on 13 August and GCSEs on 20 August, as listed by WJEC.

When is A-level results day 2026?

A-level results day is Thursday 13 August 2026 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

AS level and T Level results in England are released on the same date. In Wales, the date also covers qualifications including AS and A levels, the Advanced Skills Baccalaureate Wales and a range of Level 3 awards.

Students applying to university can check the status of their application through the UCAS Hub from 8am UK time.

The Hub may show that a university place has been confirmed, that an insurance choice has been accepted or that the application is still being considered. It does not show the student’s actual grades. Those normally come directly from the school, college or examination centre.

The school or college decides exactly when and how students receive their results. Some invite students in to collect an envelope, while others use email or an online portal. Check the instructions from the centre rather than assuming everything will appear at 8am.

When is GCSE results day 2026?

GCSE results day is Thursday 20 August 2026 in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Schools and colleges decide how students receive their grades. That may mean collecting them in person, logging into a portal or receiving them electronically.

Going in person can be helpful because teachers and careers advisers are usually available to discuss sixth form, college, apprenticeships, training and other next steps.

It also provides the traditional results-day experience of opening an envelope while pretending not to study everyone else’s facial expression.

When is results day in Scotland?

Qualifications Scotland results day is Tuesday 4 August 2026.

This covers Scottish qualifications including National 5s, Highers and Advanced Highers.

Students receive their Scottish Qualifications Certificate by post. Those who registered for My Qualifications Scotland can also receive results by text, email or both, with messages sent from 8am.

University applicants can see their UCAS application status from 9am UK time. Eligible applicants can add a Clearing choice from 10am.

Qualifications Scotland also operates a free appeals service. Anyone concerned about a result should first read the official guidance and speak to their school, college or training provider.

When do BTEC and vocational results come out?

Vocational and technical qualifications do not all have one universal results date.

Students taking a Level 3 vocational or technical qualification that they need for progression to higher education should receive their result on or before Thursday 13 August 2026.

Students taking a Level 2 or Level 1/2 vocational or technical qualification for progression to further education should receive their result on or before Thursday 20 August 2026.

This includes many qualifications commonly described as BTECs, Cambridge Technicals and other vocational awards. However, the exact date depends on the qualification and awarding organisation.

Some vocational qualifications are assessed on demand and release results at different points during the year. Students should check with their school, college or awarding organisation rather than assuming every vocational result will arrive on the main A-level or GCSE date.

When are Cambridge International results released?

Cambridge International follows a separate timetable for its June 2026 examination series:

• Cambridge International AS and A Level: Tuesday 11 August 2026
• Cambridge IGCSE and O Level: Tuesday 18 August 2026

Cambridge releases these results to schools from 6am GMT/UTC. The school or examination centre then decides how and when to issue them to individual students.

Cambridge also notes that a small number of organisations may use different release dates, so candidates should follow the instructions provided by their own centre.

When were International Baccalaureate results released?

Students taking the May 2026 International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme or Career-related Programme received their results on Monday 6 July 2026.

Students normally access them through the IB candidate website using the login details supplied by their programme coordinator.

The IB date falls much earlier than the main UK A-level results day, although many IB students applying to UK universities will still use UCAS to follow the status of their application.

What time do exam results come out?

There is no universal results collection time for every student.

For university applicants, UCAS says application statuses update from:

• 9am UK time on Qualifications Scotland results day
• 8am UK time on the main England, Wales and Northern Ireland results day

UCAS does not display the actual exam grades. Students normally collect or access those through their school or college, so they should check the centre’s own opening time and instructions.

Do not discover at 7.58am that the login details are buried in an email from June with the subject line “Important information: please retain”.

What should you do before results day?

A little preparation can make the day much less frantic.

Make sure the student knows:

• how and when they will receive their grades
• their school or college opening time
• their UCAS login and personal ID, if applicable
• how to contact their university, college or training provider
• which teacher or adviser they can speak to
• what alternatives they would consider if the original plan changes

UCAS recommends checking sign-in details, reviewing possible application statuses and researching Clearing options before results day.

A backup plan is sensible. A full family emergency summit with colour-coded binders probably is not.

What happens on A-level results day?

Students applying through UCAS should check the Hub to see whether their university place has been confirmed.

Their firm place is confirmed

Excellent. Celebrate, breathe and then check the university’s instructions about enrolment, accommodation and any remaining administration.

Their insurance place is confirmed

This normally means the conditions for the firm choice were not met, but the insurance choice has accepted them. Read the details carefully and contact the institution if anything is unclear.

The decision is still pending

A university may still be considering the application or waiting for further information. A pending decision does not automatically mean rejection. Check the application for messages and contact the institution if no explanation is available.

They are eligible for Clearing

Clearing helps universities and colleges fill course places that remain available.

For 2026 entry, Clearing runs from 2 July to 19 October 2026. On the main results day, eligible applicants can add a Clearing choice from 1pm UK time. On Qualifications Scotland results day, the equivalent time is 10am.

Students should speak to the university or college and receive permission before adding a Clearing choice.

What if the grades are lower than expected?

First, pause.

One set of results may affect the next step, but it does not define the person receiving them.

For university applications, check the UCAS Hub before assuming that a place has been lost. A university may still accept an applicant who narrowly missed the original offer.

Speak to the school or college before making rushed decisions. Possible next steps might include:

• contacting the university, college or training provider
• using Clearing
• considering a related course or foundation year
• asking about a review of marking or other post-results service
• resitting a qualification
• exploring apprenticeships, employment or another route

If a grade appears unexpectedly low, the student should ask their school or college about the process, deadlines, fees and possible outcomes before requesting any review.

What happens after GCSE results?

GCSE results often affect whether a student can progress to their intended sixth form, college course, apprenticeship or training programme.

The first step is to compare the grades with the entry requirements for the planned destination.

If the requirements have been met, follow the enrolment instructions from the school, college or provider.

If one or more grades are lower than expected, speak to both the current school and the intended destination. There may still be flexibility, an alternative subject combination or another suitable course.

Grading systems and qualification structures vary across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, so use the information supplied by the school or awarding organisation rather than trying to translate every result through one national scale.

How can parents and family help on results day?

Try not to make the morning more stressful than it already is.

Useful support includes:

• letting them decide how and when to open the results
• avoiding comparisons with siblings, friends or cousins
• helping with calls and practical information
• listening before offering a complete five-year life plan
• remembering that disappointment and pride can exist at the same time
• celebrating the work, not only the grades

A useful opening question is: “How are you feeling?”

A less useful one is: “Well? What did everyone else get?”

Results day belongs to the person receiving the results. Give them enough time to react before turning it into a family press conference.

What should you write in an exam results card?

A results-day message does not need to sound like an awards ceremony.

Something short, personal and encouraging is usually best.

Proud:
We are so proud of how hard you worked. Whatever comes next, you have achieved something brilliant.

Funny:
Congratulations. You knew enough things at exactly the right time.

For GCSE results:
GCSEs completed. Summer officially unlocked.

For A-level results:
All that revision finally paid off. You absolutely smashed it.

Supportive, whatever the result:
One set of grades can never measure everything you are capable of. We are proud of you and always will be.

Results day is about numbers on paper, but those numbers sit at the end of months or years of effort.

They represent early mornings, deadlines, revision, mock exams, missed plans and far too many highlighters.
